Encounter the magical world of moths. Did you know Colorado has over 10x more moths than butterflies – from the familiar Miller moth and the critical yucca moth, to the dramatic Sphinx moth and mysterious black witch moth!
Join the Boulder County Audubon Teen Naturalists to kick off the 2026-27 season with a pizza party and an opportunity to meet Colorado’s moths up close and personal.
Once it’s dark, we will set up illuminated viewing stations to attract moths and other nocturnal insects.
Definitely bring a camera with a close up lens if you have one - moths are remarkably cute and photogenic when seen up close. We’ll have moth experts on had to help identify all the species that show up, and will enter them in the iNaturalist database.

Who Can Participate?: Outings are open to unaccompanied students in sixth grade and up, as well as younger students accompanied by parents or guardians. Parents or guardians are welcome to attend the pizza party & moth lighting. New participants are welcome at any time.
Registration Required: To register or for any questions, contact Dave Sutherland, dsutherland4747@gmail.com or (720) 626 1797. In your RSVP, please include how many people and preferences for pizza (e.g. gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, etc). Based on responses, Dave S. will know how much pizza and what toppings to get.
Location: Foothills Nature Center. 4100 N Broadway (across from Sumac Avenue). This location is served by the SKIP bus line.
Transportation: Participants must provide their own transportation to teen naturalist trips. A participant list will be shared if participants want to coordinate carpooling among themselves. If you don’t want your contact information shared with other participants, please include this when you register.

Trip Leader Bios
Dave Sutherland is an award-winning interpretive naturalist, recently retired from the City of Boulder’s Open Space program. He has a Bachelor’s in biology from Pomona College, and a Master’s in nature interpretation from the University of Idaho. Besides nearly 30 years of work in the Boulder area, Dave has led outdoor education programs in California, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands. Dave is a self-professed natural science geek who uses games and activities to inspire others with his love of nature. He has been training for his job since the age of 4, when he began collecting rocks and butterflies and drawing his own bird books with crayons.
