Birds and Beyond
Programs and activities that bring the relevance and importance of birds to life!
BCAS is offering two fascinating new programs that connect birds to understanding the world around us: Birds and Energy and Birds as Windows to the World.
Geo Sapiens provides programs for elementary school to adult audiences in just about any setting that works for your school, organization or public group.
Birds and Energy
Birds are full of energy—literally and figuratively! With the highest body temperatures of all animals, remarkable adaptations, and awe-inspiring migrations, they have much to teach us about energy. At the same time, human energy systems affect birds uniquely and severely.
Naturalist and energy educator Martin Ogle delivers a fascinating exploration of avian life through the lens of energy . . . and vice versa! Discover how the National Audubon Society is connecting energy, climate change and birds. Learn about a myriad of energy-related adaptations in birds (including one found in the legs of birds and in modern buildings!) and new ways we are lessening the impact of human energy systems on birds. And more!
This engaging program provides a fresh, little-known window into the world of birds while deepening our understanding of one of the most important issues of our time—energy. The program can take the form of a talk/lecture, an informal demonstration with the interactive “energy bike,” or even a walk or a combination of these. Birds and Energy is suitable and can be tailored to audiences from 4th grade to adults.

Birds as a Window to the World!
Birds are, perhaps, the single best way to learn about the world! They are colorful, active and fascinating living beings that are all around us. As they have for millennia, birds capture our imagination through flight. Their migrations inform us of countries and continents far and wide and the human cultures through which they fly. Their adaptations and physiology bring fascinating lessons in life sciences. And birds are, indeed, uniquely positioned to teach us about energy in living systems! Come to understand our world in fascinating new ways through the lives of birds! As with “Birds and Energy,” this program can take multiple forms ranging from an informal demonstration to more formal, indoor sessions to walks/activities in a variety of settings.

About Geo Sapiens
Geo Sapiens is the creation of Boulder County naturalist, Earth scientist, and energy educator Martin Ogle. Geo sapiens nurtures the development of sustainable—i.e., meaningful, healthy, and engaging—ways of living on Earth.
The name Geo sapiens, meaning “Earth wise,” reflects the idea that humans are not separate from nature but a seamless continuation of Earth’s living systems. Martin believes that by understanding this relationship in a genuine way, we can take informed, positive action for a better future.
Through educational programs, consulting, and community outreach, Martin helps individuals and organizations integrate environmental and energy knowledge into their daily lives and careers.

Testimonials
Birds as a Window to the World!
“Martin presented to my middle school ornithology classes (5th–8th grade) and did an outstanding job! His positive energy, extensive knowledge of birds, and ability to connect with students made the experience memorable and meaningful. He kept students engaged and excited, and helped lay a foundation for our upcoming birding field trips. Martin is kind, passionate about his work, and a fantastic guest expert—I’d welcome him back anytime!”

Birds and Energy
“Martin Ogle gave a lively presentation entitled “Birds and Energy” for the residents at Frasier Retirement Community. He melds these two unlikely subjects with a new and timely perspective. The presentation highlights the myriad adaptations that birds have to manage their energy balance, reviews the impacts of human energy systems on birds, and outlines the opportunities and responsibilities promoting renewable energy, energy conservation, heat and electricity storage and more. and I highly recommend this talk.”
