Enjoy this amazing opportunity to observe hummingbirds up close and learn about their habitats, identification, and banding procedures from local experts.

This event will take place at the Bouricius cabin in Peaceful Valley, where the family has attracted hummingbirds since 1938! During the height of hummingbird season, Debbie and Steve use a combination of feeders and flowers to attract literally thousands of these flying gems. There are only about 100 licensed master banders in all the United States, so it is indeed a privilege to be able to visit this very important station. Renaissance man Scott Rashid will also be banding.

In addition to demonstrating the careful capture, documenting procedures and banding of these birds, Steve will talk about the finer points of plumage identification for males, females and juveniles of different species. You will visit the Bouricius’ hummingbird meadow and learn which flowering plants fuel their high energy needs. We should see three species and perhaps a surprise? You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and further enjoy this special habitat along Middle St. Vrain Creek.

Donations of refined sugar will be gratefully appreciated as last year they used 460 pounds!

This trip is part of the Interludes with Nature field trip series. These trips are led by the area’s most knowledgeable birders and naturalists who take participants to places they wouldn’t often get to see. Monies raised by this important fundraising tool send our Teen Naturalists to birding camps.
