May/June 2002 Wildlife Inventory

May 2002 is a month that will be remembered by birders in Boulder County for many years to come. Its total of 243 bird species broke all previous records; the past May record was 229 species in 1995 and has been as low as 167 species in 1992. Both shorebird (26 species in May) and warbler migration (24 species) were unusually strong. The undoubted hot spot in the county was Boulder Creek where unusual migrants seemed to be spotted daily, and the Golden-winged Warbler obligingly showed itself to numerous birders for over a week. What was different from previous years, perhaps due to the use of the Internet, was that most birds were seen by multiple birders. We therefore had a record number of reports. The Boulder Audubon Birdathon and Indian Peaks Spring Bird Counts (IP) assured that all the common species were reliably reported as well. A Laughing Gull seen at Union Reservoir was a first record for the inventory, although it does not count as a Boulder County bird. Unusual species which had not been seen for at least one year were (with the year last seen given in parentheses) Glossy Ibis (1996), Black-bellied Plover (1999), White-rumped Sandpiper (1995), Short-billed Dowitcher (1999), Caspian Tern (2000), Common Tern (2000), Least Flycatcher (1999), Gray Flycatcher (1991), Eastern Phoebe (1999), Blue-headed Vireo (1999), Cassin’s Vireo (1999), Golden-winged Warbler (1999), Black-throated Green Warbler (1999), Palm Warbler (1999), Bay-breasted Warbler (2000), Prothonotary Warbler (2000), Worm-eating Warbler (1997), Baird’s Sparrow (1984), and Baltimore Oriole (1997). By comparison June was a very average summer month with little activity, apart from the Indian Peaks Breeding Bird Count (IP), by birders leading to a total of 159 bird species. Boreal Owl was seen for the first time since 1989. TOP
