March/April 2002 Wildlife Inventory

March and April 2002 continued to be mild, particularly in the mountains. Migration seemed to be early for nearly all species. This caused high numbers of birds to be seen in both months. In fact, March’s 115 species was the second highest March total for Boulder County since our records began, and April’s total (170 species) tied with that of 1984 as the highest April total ever for Boulder County. Shorebird migration began in March, and was really strong by the last week of April. Warbler migration was also well underway by the end of April, and many of our breeding birds had returned. There were many unusual species. Of particular note, having not been seen for at least one year, were Snowy Plover (last seen in 2000 and only the second record for the county), Ash-throated Flycatcher (also last seen in 2000), and Juniper Titmouse (last seen in 1993 and only a third record for the county). We have added a new area number for this month: in future where area 8 has become part of Broomfield County we will designate the area by the letter B. TOP
