July/August 2002 Wildlife Inventory

July and August 2002 were typical summer birding months in Boulder County. By the end of July shorebird migration was well under way. By August some of our summer breeders were becoming harder to find. Zone-tailed Hawk was a first record for the Boulder County wildlife inventory, as would be Eastern Meadowlark if confirmed. Distinguishing between Eastern and Western Meadowlark is notoriously difficult even when they are both seen and heard. Birds that were seen after an absence of at least one year were Sanderling (last seen in 2000), Magnificent Hummingbird (1999), Cassin’s Kingbird (2000) and Dickcissel (1998). New sightings for the year were Black-chinned Hummingbird, White-eyed Vireo and Townsend’s Warbler. Calliope Hummingbirds were seen in numerous locations as far out into the plains as Niwot; these birds have made a dramatic increase in Boulder County during the last five years. A few unexpected “winter” species were seen such as Common Loon and Bald Eagle. There were several sightings of birds that are normally only seen once (if at all) in the year, but had already been reported during our phenomenal spring migration. Altogether 173 bird species were seen in July and 177 species in August making record totals for both months. The previous highest totals were 159 and 157 respectively, but these were probably unrealistically low due to a lack of reports for these months. TOP
