January/February 2002 Wildlife Inventory

January and February 2002 were fairly mild winter months with little precipitation. A lot of water remained open. Many unseasonal birds appeared to be wintering: Eastern Bluebird, Mountain Bluebird, American Pipit, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Common Grackle and Great-tailed Grackle. White-winged Crossbill and Trumpeter Swan were seen for the first time since 2000. Bushtit, White-throated Sparrow, Harris’ Sparrow and Common Redpoll were good winter sightings. Many people commented on an influx of crossbills at lower elevations than normal. The observation of mountain birds was helped by the Indian Peaks Winter Bird Count (IP). Altogether 98 bird species were seen in January, and 89 in February. This was a fairly high total for January, and a very average total for February. TOP
