December 2001 Wildlife Inventory

December 2001 was a typical winter month with ducks and hawks reported in fair numbers. Probably the most unusual bird of the month was a Broad-winged Hawk captured on a photograph, so that there was no doubt about the identification. Glaucous Gull and Varied Thrush were reported for the first time this year. Tundra Swan was seen after an absence of a year. Other good or unusual sightings were Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, Thayer’s Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Short-eared Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Bushtit, Rock Wren, Eastern Bluebird, Northern Mockingbird, American Pipit and Common Yellowthroat. Four birds that would previously have been considered really unusual winter sightings but are becoming much more common are Mourning Dove, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Great-tailed Grackle and Common Grackle. The Boulder Christmas Bird Count (BCBC) counts all the birds seen within a fifteen mile diameter circle, and increases our totals for the month. Altogether 118 bird species were seen in December, of which 99 were seen on the Christmas Count TOP
