This complex has been referred to as a “Mausoleum for Engangered Wildlife” in a New York Times article which goes on to say, “the cabinets and shelves of the National Wildlife Property Repository, just northeast of Denver, are crammed with stuffed monkeys and ivory carvings, snow leopard coats and dried seal penises, chairs with tails and lamps with hooves. Most of them are contraband, seized at airports in New York City, Los Angeles and other major ports of entry; some are donated by people who have no use for them.”
National Eagle and Wildlife Property Repository:
10 A.M.: This indoor facility is located on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Department. It is dedicated to accounting for all confiscated or otherwise forfeited endangered wildlife contraband. It is here that dead-collected Bald and Golden Eagles feathers and body parts are redistributed to Native American Tribes. You will learn of the laws that attempt to protect wildlife and the challenges of enforcing these regulations from burgeoning illegal trade around the world.
