Composers are drawn to mountains! On November 12, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra will play the Colorado premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s suite “Cold Mountain” to transport your mind to far away vistas, and a landscape in another time and place. Join naturalist Dave Sutherland for a free pre-concert nature hike to sample mountainous music by classical composers like Mussorgsky, Smetana, Hovhaness, Grofé and others. How would you use music to capture the essence of Boulder’s mountains? This will be a fairly easy loop hike on the South Mesa trail.

For more information about the Boulder Philharmonic, and to purchase tickets for the concert, please visit their website: https://boulderphil.org/

NOTE: Participants for this field trip must be fully vaccinated. Participants must follow CDC and State of Colorado and Boulder County Public Health guidelines on the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants must also follow individual field trip leader requirements, such as fully vaccinated status to register and/or wearing masks when in close proximity. And, PLEASE stay home if you are feeling unwell.

Where and when to meet: Meet at 8:45 AM at the Eldorado Park and Ride (map) at the northeast corner of Hwy 93 and Marshall Road, for a short carpool to South Mesa trailhead since parking can be tight; or hope for a spot at the trailhead (info and directions here) and meet the group there at 9 AM.
